Mary Ellen (Schlechty)Fields, 99, of Farmland, IN, passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2023, peacefully while in the company of family members at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, IN. Mary was born in Randolph County, IN, on June 25, 1924, a daughter of the late Clarice (Warren) and Carl E. Schlechty. She was a 1943 graduate of Jackson High School in OH, and worked in manufacturing for Westinghouse until her retirement in 1965. Mary was loving wife of the late Duane Edward Fields, who she happily married on July 24, 1943 and sadly lost in 2001 after 58 wonderful years of marriage. Together they enjoyed rodeo’s, square dancing, camping and helping each other with their back-hoeing company. Mary also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, reading Amish books, mowing, word searches, collecting dolls, listening to country and gospel music, and watching the Lawrence Welk Show. This super sweet, very patient, do anything for her family type of mother, grandmother and “Granny Great”, will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her, but today we rejoice in the comfort that she is once again reunited with the love of her life. Mary is survived by 4 children; Larry D. Fields (Bev), Regina K.(Fields)Hines (Steve Thornburg), Dianna L.(Fields)Engle (Gary), Warren J. Fields (Jackie), several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Clarice Schlechty, her husband Duane E. Fields, and 2 brothers; Gene Schlechty and John Schlechty. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in Union Cemetery, Randolph County, IN. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to MJS Mortuaries-Farmland Chapel.
