Don R. Hobson

 Don R. Hobson, 91, of Dunkirk, IN, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2024 peacefully while in the company of family members at Pine Knoll in Winchester, IN. He was born on June 26, 1932 a son of the late Simon LeRoy and Crystal Marie (Bales) Hobson. Don was a 1950 graduate of Albany High School, continued his education in trade school and proudly served in the United States Navy. He was the loving husband of Ellen Kay (Lindsey) Hobson who he happily married on May 23, 2011.  Don was the Owner and CEO of Hawthorne Products LLC, a member of the Redkey Masonic Lodge, inducted into the Farriers' Hall of Fame, enjoyed thoroughbred race horses, hunting trips to Wyoming, gun enthusiast, country music, camping, history, ancestry, traveling to trade shows with Ellen and researching local heritage and ways of life. He was a very social man who loved to laugh and tease, was proud of his community, hardworking and dedicated to blacksmithing, equine care and preservation. Don is survived by his wife Ellen Kay Hobson, 2 step sons; Doug Schwartz (Ann), Denny Schwartz (Leann), 1 brother Jerry Hobson, 1 sister Marita Fields (Leon), 5 grandchildren; Kayla Priem (Andrew), Kelsey Sprunger (Bryce), Madeline Foster (Tanner), Conner Schwartz, Makenna Schwartz, 4 great grandchildren; Rhett Priem, Knox Priem, Liam Sprunger, Finley Foster, special friend Jim Morgan, 5 nephews; Bryan Hobson, Darin Hobson, Douglas Hobson, Tim Davis, Kurt Davis, 3 nieces; Rhonda Cooper, Jill Light, Beth Bentley, 13 great nieces and nephews and 3 great great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Simon and Crystal Hobson, 2 brothers; Larry Hobson, Myron Lee Hobson and 1 daughter Kristin Kam (Hobson) Cross. Services will be private at the convenience of the family followed by burial and military honors in Black Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to MJS Mortuaries - Redkey Chapel.
